Meet Artist Steve Butler

Saturday, September 12th
5 - 8pm
These quirky pieces of furniture Butler calls "Bread-side Tables" reuse vintage metal breadboxes and ottoman legs of the post war industrial era. Though wood is his primary material, Butler, Department Head of Woodworking at Peters Valley Craft Center in Layton, NJ has been collecting breadboxes for several years. Related to his interest in the modern movement as a furniture designer, they've fueled the artist's recent interest in "giving new life to an old object or transforming the object into something else, creating a duality in use and purpose."

September is Special
It's Ovarian Cancer Awareness Month
Since my mom's college room mate, Barbara Salamy, passed away from ovarian cancer over two years ago, my awareness of this silent disease has risen. If detected early, survival rate is 90 - 95% but there is currently no early detection test. If you want to learn more about the symptoms of ovarian cancer, I have symptom cards at TraillWorks.

This morning my friend, Linda Hirsch and I hung teal ribbons around the town of Newton for Kaleidoscope of Hope, a non profit organization that raises funds and awareness for ovarian cancer research. It was part of their Turn the Towns Teal campaign which was started by Gail MacNeil, co-founder of KOH and past president, who recently passed away from her battle with ovarian cancer. If you see teal ribbons in your town, it's for ovarian cancer awareness.

This year, to raise funds, I will be partnering with Oak Ridge, NJ, jeweler, Buccieri's GEMS & JEWELRY

These pieces mark Julia and Rachel's first artwork with me. Most of my students begin with a study of Harry, my over-sized rubber ducky. And, dependent of age and interest, the approach is treated very differently. I am astounded by the girls' handling of color!
