New Commission:
Sacco-the indifferent pug

Jennie's new subject is a very indifferent pug named Sacco. As seen above, this is a photo from his first ever photo shoot! From there Jennie began some preliminary sketches for the client to choose from. The first sketch, was chosen and the oil painting has begun. You can view the progress and keep up to date on TraillWorks' Facebook page in the "Commissions" album.

 Art Lessons...

On the subject of drawing

Jennie has used different resources while teaching her students, one of which, James McMullan's columns on drawing which were featured in The NY Times OpEd pages. Jennie has referenced these lessons in teaching teens and adults about drawing skills and techniques.
David Shipley, the editor of the New York Times OpEd page, asked James McMullan to write a series of columns on the subject of drawing for the online edition of the newspaper, instructing readers on the most fundamental aspects of drawing and then moving on to more advanced elements of the skill. McMullan wrote and illustrated twelve weekly columns beginning on September 24th, 2010. McMullen's biography and the twelve columns on drawing, just as they appeared in the Times can be found here. The above image is an illustration by James McMullan from the first column entitled, "Phantom Skill".  It's a great reference to jump-start you back into drawing.

New Student work

Many new student pieces have been added to the "Student Work" album on TraillWorks' Facebook page. Below are just three examples of the different types of artwork being created in the studio. Please continue to the "Student Work" album to view all the work.

"Mandala", acrylic and colored pencil,
©2011 Laurel O'Rourke,
adult student taught by Corrie Guddemi

I (Corrie) introduced Laurel to the concept and history of the mandala, and she chose the subject matter and media to work in. The plant is representative of the bittersweet vine and berries, and the outside border is done to mimic basket or fabric weaving.

Untitled, graphite and india ink, ©2011 Phillip Nezamis

Phillip chose the subject matter of this piece since he has an interest in dragons. Working from a calendar image, he cropped the photo and worked closely from it to create his final piece.

Untitled, watercolor and pen, ©2011 Miles Shaw

Miles completed the above assignment after learning about Italian painter, Giuseppe Arcimboldo best known for creating imaginative portrait heads made entirely of objects like fruits, vegetables, flowers, fish, and books.

Inside the Gallery...

Q & A with Martha C. Hall

I (Corrie), often wish I had our guest artists in the gallery to pick their brains about their creative process. So, I conducted a little interview with two of our most recent artists. This month we'll be featuring fabric artist, Martha C. Hall. Stay tuned for next month's interview with Brenda Decker. Here's what Martha had to say:

Corrie: Do you have any formal training in the arts?

Martha C. Hall: I have a B.A. in Studio Art from Montclair State University. While there I studied Textile Design and Painting.

Corrie: What gave you the idea to do the bird pieces? Will there be more?

Martha C. Hall: The small bird pieces were so much fun to make. The whole thing started when a pair of cardinals started making their nest in a tree right by our back door. It was fascinating to watch their activity. I was working in the small 4" x 6" format at the time and of course it seemed a perfect subject.I started tagging my "Bird Guide" with the various birds I see in the yard and on my walks, and I want to chronicle more of them.

To continue reading my full interview with Martha please visit TraillWorks: the Blog. Also, more of Martha's thoughts, work and photos can be found on her website which includes her own blog, marthahallart.com.
