TraillWorks E-Newsletter
October 23, 2009
 Hi Friends,
This week brings you the background behind my 2010 calendars, a sneak peak at a holiday collaboration with another artist, first looks at new works, and what my students are up to. My days at the studio are never dull and I'm constantly grateful to be able to spend my life devoted to my passions.

I hope you enjoy this issue and find something of interest!

2010 Calendars at the Printer

2010 is just around the corner and my 4th annual TraillWorks calendar is at the printer, due to ship next week. The calendar is another compilation of works I created this year.

This year has been the toughest and probably most productive year ever. As I write in the calendar, adjusting to life with a new baby has shifted my focus and work. My painting time in the beginning of the year was shortened and it forced me to paint smaller, and quicker pieces. The work in this year's calendar ranges from a few plein air paintings of my son and landscapes, to Wedding Cake Portrait commissions and of course more appliances.

Get a sneak peak at what's inside the calendar at TraillWorks: The Blog.

Reserve your calendars now! For every single calendar you purchase at full price, each second calendar is 20% off. Offer good only through Oct. 31st.

I'm very excited about a project I took under this week with an artist friend of mine, who shall remain nameless until a later date. I just want to keep you in suspense it's so exciting.

To lead up to the announcement of the project I've created a contest. Guess what I will be producing and the person with the closest guess will get a chance to reserve the first one at 25% off. Post your answers on my Facebook Page by October 31st. I'll reveal the project the first week of November and announce a winner.

So here are the hints:

  • pulp
  • wax

New Painting

Homage to Julia, 24" x 24", Mixed Media on Panel, $949

Inspired by Julia Child, this painting was my first venture in collage since high school. Much of the imagery comes from research I did into Julia's kitchen, which was designed by her husband, Paul. I also incorporated a recent newspaper article that was left in my studio door by a friend.

New Giclées Released

Giclées have become the modern-day lithograph. It is an excellent way of making a reproduction of an artwork. Meaning "to spurt" in French, giclées are high quality reproductions made with archival, pigment based inks on acid-free archival papers from high resolution digital images that have been color corrected to closely match the original.

I have been producing reproductions of my work for a few years, though you may not have been aware as my web site does not indicate it. I am working on updating the web site, but in the meantime I have released two giclées just in time for the holidays. Both have been reproduced on paper and can be purchased matted or un-matted.

Jersey Blue, 12" x 8", Limited Edition Giclée of 75, $89 (matted to 12" x 16"), $59 (un-matted)

Inspired by last summer's Summer Blues on Spring Street and my fanaticism for blueberries, I have finally reproduced this piece. An expressionistic portrayal of a NJ icon, the blueberry.

Ice Cream Diddle, 24" x 13", Limited Edition Giclée of 75, $125 (matted to 28" x 16"), $99 (un-matted) or Artist's Proof for $75 (matted only and only 1 available)

The original painting was completed in January of 2008 for my son's nursery. He absolutely adores this painting and recognizes his dog, Ringo. A loose interpretation of Hey Diddle Diddle, this cow might be more interested in the ice cream cone than the moon. This would make a charming piece in a nursery or child's room.

As of July my work has been featured on a new online gallery, ArtQuiver. They are a cutting-edge business, started up by Matt Schenck who was responsible for the success of well-known language-learning software Rosetta Stone. Brought up surrounded by art, the father of a young family in VA wanted to start collecting art but was frustrated by the traditional gallery models and lack of access.

This became a business mission for him as he sought to create a new model for selling art online, making art buying more accessible and egalitarian. He leveraged both technology and the web to create ArtQuiver. ArtQuiver sought me out over the summer and asked me to become one of their exhibiting artists. After quite a bit of research I was truly impressed by the quality of their site, the artwork, the innovation of what they were doing and decided to climb aboard.

The really phenomenal thing about ArtQuiver is that you almost don't need to see them in person because of the way the site permits you to view the work as though it's in a real space, as well as the detail shots. Plus they have a lifetime returns policy. They are truly revolutionizing the way people purchase art. View my virtual gallery.

And, right now if you sign up for their email list, ArtQuiver is giving you $100 towards your first purchase (my work of others).

 Student Corner

Student Works this Week:

It's been a busy couple of weeks teaching since my last newsletter. I had thirteen students this week that are working on a range of exciting pieces. Let's see, there are some still life paintings and drawings of pitchers and percolators; an art deco stylized painting of my giant rubber duck, Harry; some paper collages of animals a la Eric Carle; two very creative wedding cake designs and even more.

I am blessed to have such eager, talented students who are willing to really work. They are pushing their creativity and their technique to produce interesting and high quality work.

To see recently completed work, check back often on the TraillWorks Facebook page.
