OPEN ORANGE Opening Reception Friday, May 9th | 6 - 9pm
ValleyArts Firehouse Gallery 580 Forest Street, Orange, NJ I am honored to be one of 36 artists selected from New Jersey and New York for the inaugural OPEN ORANGE exhibition organized by
ValleyArts. This is my first appearance in an exhibit in my new hometown. I live on the edge of the Valley Arts District, a region comprised by Orange and the edge of West Orange that is experiencing a renaissance. Though the work selected is not new, I'd love to introduce you to the work of area artists and a gallery which is hosting some exciting shows. Please join me at the reception, or at one of the area companion events to the exhibit. Gallery Talk Saturday, May 24th | 3pm Join a lively discussion with and about the artists led by Nigel Freeman, director of African-American Fine Art at New York's Swann Auction Galleries. - 17 at Peters Valley Craft Center, Layton, NJ
In honor of Tea Week at Peters Valley we will use this storied drink as the subject of our paintings. The trappings of tea make excellent surfaces to explore texture, reflection, color, tone and composition through paint. Beginners will learn to see and simplify the complex shapes created by reflective surfaces and experienced painters will hone their
observation, color mixing, and application of paint. We will explore some of the history of tea in art and consider how to create meaningful contemporary paintings featuring the centuries-old beverage. The workshop will be taught in oils without the use of solvents, but students who prefer acrylic will be welcome as well. Due to the lack of proper ventilation, we will use alternative methods of cleaning brushes and a direct painting technique which avoids the use of
solvents.
