PAINTING THE TEXTURE OF TEA

In honor of Tea Week at Peters Valley we will use this storied drink as the subject of our paintings. The trappings of tea make excellent surfaces to explore texture, reflection, color, tone and composition through paint. Beginners will learn to see and simplify the complex shapes created by reflective surfaces and experienced painters will hone their
observation, color mixing, and application of paint. We will explore some of the history of tea in art and consider how to create meaningful contemporary paintings featuring the centuries-old beverage. The workshop will be taught in oils without the use of solvents, but students who prefer acrylic will be welcome as well. Due to the lack of proper ventilation, we will use alternative methods of cleaning brushes and a direct painting technique which avoids the use of
solvents.
