Look, Learn, and Love . . . then Bring it Home!

Published: Thu, 05/14/15

Dear ,

This newsletter is long overdue and I wanted to wish all of the moms reading a belated Happy Mother's Day! I'm still basking in the memory of homemade pancakes with fresh sliced strawberries in bed, shared with my little boys. I haven't been in touch since March due to all of the recent studio time, which has been paying off with several new works and opportunities for you to see them in May and June! With my focus back on producing work, teaching my lessons, and my family, I've been able to hone in on what's most important. As you look, learn and love the work, I hope you'll find something of meaning to you! And, I'd love to see you in Maplewood or South Orange!

Creatively,
Jennie

Join me for the 12th Annual South Orange Maplewood Artists Studio Tour—held on the 1st Sunday in June. Explore one of the most important arts events in the region and discover the dynamic artistic community that I'm now a part of. Though my studio is in West Orange, the tour has welcomed me with a beautiful venue (JESPY House) that will host other artists, as well as work by their clients, all accompanied by live jazz. With nearly 80 artists in studios, galleries and group exhibitions across the two towns, the Studio Tour is not to be missed!

What's in a Name . . . of an Artist?
South Orange Maplewood Artists Studio Tour
I've been struggling recently with something less tangible than my artwork: my name. I'm from Generation X, or so I'm told by a recent online game. I was born in 1977, so now you know my age, and raised to be and do whatever I want. Both a blessing and a curse.

But with that freedom comes questions and uncharted territory, and mistakes. So, when I got married ten years ago, I wasn't certain what do do with my name. I had started my artistic career and all of my works had been signed "Schaeffer," my maiden, or as another artist called it recently, my birth name. At the age of 26 (I turned 27 the week after our wedding) I was among the first of my friends to marry. I had many conversations with the few who were marrying about their naming decisions. Should I keep my birth name, should I lose it and take on my husband's name, Goldberg? Or should I lose my middle name, Traill, shift my birth name, Schaeffer, to my middle, and take my husband's as my last? Should I hyphenate? And then, what should I go by for my business and what are the legal / social ramifications of those choices?
