New Works in Process & Completion
"Refuge from Stress", Mixed Media on Aquabord, 8" x 10", ©2020 Jennie Traill Schaeffer, $375
Did you notice anything different about these TeaScapes? They aren't as landscapey as my prior works, but I still see them fitting into the series. They also have the added medium of watersoluble graphite (a pencil that dilutes and mushes around like ink when wet). My artist friends have been asking me about these works - the significance
of the chair, what I was thinking about when I painted them.
Chairs have made their way into my artwork periodically since I was in art school. During my 20s and early 30s, I was incorporating them as thrones in my appliance portraits. Now, they are acting as an invitation - to sit, to pause, to hold space within the space. I'd like you to place yourself within the chair, or at least envision that. The chairs in these works are a rendition of the womb chair, which carries another layer
of symbolism.
These three darker works on Aquabord, flew out of my head and hands during the start of the wildfires in Australia. I was experiencing a lot of anxiety about those, as well as some personal fires. I was surprised by how quickly these works developed and finished - sometimes art comes out rapidly with a flow that seems almost too easy. I'm not sure if I will make any more of these in particular, but as with the
creative process, sometimes we have to follow intuition - I'll know more once I get back to work in the studio.

This piece is still very much a work in progress, and has already changed somewhat since I took this photo. My conundrum now is what to do with the white space in the upper right. I'll get the answer soon enough.
