Hi there , It's a beautiful blue
bird day in NC as I write this. Sadly, it very much reminds me of the tragedy that befell NYC and our country 22 years ago. So much trauma and loss, and yet, we remember and have moved forward with hope and love. Art reminds us that we have the capacity to build, to shape, to tap into an inner voice, and interpret, process or even escape the trauma of the world. I'm thinking today of my friend, Sybil Archibald, an artist in NJ who I'm indebted to for her willingness to introduce me to many artists and help me grow professionally when I relocated to West Orange in
2013. She's currently running a Kickstarter Campaign to fund her book: The Inner Life of The Artist, 900 Monotypes in 900 Days. I watched
her introductory video about her endeavor just last night - she has a rare autoimmune disorder from which she was expected to only live 5 years after her diagnosis in her 20s. It's been 25 years since and she attributes her artmaking practice to not only extending her life but transforming it. I've seen her work, both in her studio and in exhibits in NJ, and followed the development of these monotypes on Instagram - it is truly powerful, as is her being. She's a true gift to me, and the rest of
the world. I do have much to share with you about my own work down below, and many
opportunities to collect, commission, or enroll in an art-making experience. However, Sybil's story is too powerful not to share and gives me so much urgency to get moving in my own work. Please take a moment to learn more about her, consider supporting her campaign, and follow her. www.sybilarchibaldart.com/ Creatively,
Yoga Mat Sale Extended through 9/17 |
You might have missed that my remaining in-stock yoga mats were on sale during Labor Day weekend. It's not your fault - I only announced it on Instagram. It was
last-minute and my newsletter subscribers are generally the first to know. With that intention, I've extended the sale through 9/17 and I've stopped promoting it on social media. I have ONLY 4 mats in stock (two designs). I'd love for them to find a home. I'm getting started on a new Mini Studio Dog Portrait commission. It's a mixed blessing to portray this cutie -
Ivan died this year after supportive wheels kept him going during the final year of a decade of life. A work colleague of Ivan's owner is gifting the portrait in honor of his memory. I'm eager to finish Ivan's drawing and send this memorial of him home to Tampa, FL. I'm still booking portraits through September and will continue to donate 10% of the profits to APS of Durham. Fill out my commission inquiry form on my website and we can discuss your ideas further, or you can book a standard-size portrait - drawn or painted directly through my website.

Upcoming Workshops Inspired a Q & A
Recently, Sara Mannone, owner of Casa Bella Market in Durham, invited me to the store to talk about my work and process. On September 23rd, I'm teaching a workshop inspired by my TeaScape paintings. You'll get a chance to learn how to make image transfers from tea packages, layer a meaningful landscape over the transfer and be in community with other
makers.
JOIN ME INSIDE at CASA BELLA MARKET on 9/23
OR, JOIN ME OUTSIDE at THE ENO on 9/24 and/or 9/26
Or Meet me Virtually . . .
Private Art Coaching is an amazing way to get tailored support for your needs. Send me an email to get the process started, or, if you're completely ready to go - you can book sessions directly through my site. I will follow up with you to coordinate availability and a mutual time for both of us.
Follow my Virtual Art Residency
During the rest of September, I'm participating in the Thrive Together Network's Virtual Art
Residency. Thrive Together is a global network of artists identifying as women. My plan is to expand on the sketches I created during my February 2022 residency and develop new works to increase my body of Take a Seat works. My planning week took a turn after coming down with a cold brought home from the first week of school. So, I'm just now printing out sketches and reference images, aligning them on my floating wall, to start to see dialogues and consider the next steps. Folks, this is both exciting and scary. I don't have a clear plan yet - I'm going to take a seat this week and try to understand the images I was creating and listen to what wants to be expanded and explored
more. Follow along on Instagram as I work through this process. I'd love to hear from you! Let me know your thoughts about the new work. |
