Inside the Artist's Studio...

In the past month I haven't had the opportunity to get into the studio much. Between getting ready for the current "Taped Up" exhibit, the upcoming student show, getting my photos taken, hiring a web designer, framing artwork and taking care of my health, studio time has escaped me.  However, I've gotten back in over the past few days to complete a surprise painting for a friend and begin work on a long-overdue commission. I can't yet share them with you, but be sure to check my Facebook page soon for pictures and updates.

To elaborate on some of the things I've been doing, I hired a designer to complete a whole new redesign of the TraillWorks web site. Set for completion in June, the site is going to become much more interactive, be more up-to date with my own work, as well as guest artists in the gallery and allow for greater social media connectivity. Let me introduce you to Lawrence Braun of Braun Imaging. I look forward to working with him and refining TraillWorks.com online.

The photo of me above was taken by Milford, PA, photographer, Alex Cena. I was referred to him by artist, Lindsay Ketterer Gates, also of Milford. He's doing a photo project, artists as subject matter in their studios. Focusing particularly on artists of the Delaware Valley, Northeast Pennsylvania, and Northwest New Jersey. I had the honor to invite this talented photographer into my studio in January where he took several shots of me wearing my apron from the Crayola Factory, which I still paint in. You can see the entire portfolio at AlexCena.com. Thanks, Alex, for the flattering and creative shots of me at TraillWorks.

The past three weeks have been very full and quite productive, while not as much in the studio, these are things that help get an artist, and in my case, a gallery/studio, onto the next level. I'm very much looking forward to the rest of 2011 and hope to see you at an upcoming event.

Art Lessons... TraillWorks Student Exhibit and Why We Need Arts

A lot of artwork is getting completed and framed at TraillWorks in preparation for the annual student show, opening on March 12th. From 4 - 7pm. The gallery will be bustling with students, parents, grandparents, and friends to take a peak at the works of these growing artists in a very professional gallery setting. Quite an honor for these students - children, teens and adults. Here's a link to an album of pictures from the 1st Annual Student Show held in June of 2009 at TraillWorks' former location on Spring Street.

There will be at last count, fifteen students exhibiting, with each student contributing at the least one work, with many hanging two or more, depending on what they've finished and how long they've been taking lessons. In addition to the artwork on display, students will be making creative foods for the reception.  During the evening, guests and students will have an opportunity to vote for the most artistically presented food. The top vote-getters will win some very desirable prizes. To see more Student work and learn more about the show click here.

The 3rd Annual TraillWorks Student Show purposefully falls during Youth Art Month, a nationally-designated month to emphasize the value of K-12 art education for all children and to encourage support for quality school art programs. This is a timely exhibit as many arts education programs around the country and locally are seeing cuts.

*** Unfortunately, with current budget constraints, Congress is making plans to cut the National Endowment for the Arts. You probably weren't aware, but the NEA touches us locally through our local Sussex County Arts & Heritage Council which re grants money to several county organizations that provide arts-related programming. Here's a list of this year's re grantees:
  1. Cameo Productions, LTD.
  2. Center for Prevention and Counseling
  3. Chamber Music at Great Gorge
  4. Community Choral Society
  5. Harmony in Motion
  6. K.E.E.P.
  7. New Sussex Symphony
  8. Project Self-Sufficiency
  9. SCARC
  10. Skylands Youth Symphony
  11. Sussex County High Point Harmonizers
  12. Sussex County Oratorio Society
  13. Sussex County Teen Arts
  14. Sussex County Youth Orchestra
  15. Wantage Veterans Memorial Committee

Jennie recently read an interesting article in Psychology Today explaining why the Arts are such an important part of our society. Please click here to read why the Arts are important for all of us.

Please join us for an artistic evening on Saturday, March, 12th, from 4 - 7pm, to celebrate the accomplishments of these talented students. A recognition ceremony will be held at 6pm that evening.

(Above) Recycled Collage by Maddie Chymiy. Maddie and several other students worked on a recycled art project that re-purposed scraps, drawings, and other items that were leftover in their folders from previous art projects. We looked at artwork by Kandinsky and other obstructionists for inspiration. Each student was guided by what they found in their folders, and their works unfolded from there.

Teen Class... We are spotlighting three of our teen students this month. Brooke Reczka and Allison Ward are two relatively new students to TraillWorks, while Jake Scordato has been a student of Jennie's for over two years.
