Inside the Artist's Studio
It has finally begun! The mural for St. Joseph's Regional School is going up and Jennie couldn't be more excited.
Here Jennie is proudly sitting atop the 15' scaffolding getting ready to add her first stroke of paint to the largest blank canvas ever set before her. After four nights working at the school in the dark with an art projector, ladders, bungie cords, and wonderful parent "buddies", Jennie has nearly completed the outlining of 6 of the 9 windows. She's using special paint markers designed for graffiti and large scale outdoor art to transfer the images from a 7" drawing to 9' - 15' windows on cinder block walls.
Progress is looking good! Stay tuned for more updates as they happen on our Facebook page!
New Student Work and Accomplishments
I'm so excited by all of the new works currently under creation or recently finished at TraillWorks. Many new students have enrolled, in addition to the loyal students I have. As my students know, my own education in the arts in very important, both to my own work and the quality of my teaching. In the past few months I've had the privilege to see two major art exhibitions: de Kooning at the MOMA and Van Gogh at the Philadelphia Museum of Art. Both were truly impressive and inspiring and have already influenced my lessons.
In March I taught a workshop at Teen Arts that utilized mid-century abstract-expressionist artist, Willem de Kooning's drawing process of reusing drawings and transferring them onto a new artwork. This workshop has evolved into a lesson many of my students are exploring now. Below is an example of one of the first completed pieces by student, Carly Griffiths. Carly started the piece by executing a drawing in charcoal of her dog, then transferred it to paper, overlapping it several times until satisfied with the composition. Finally she chose a limited color palette and painted in shapes using tempera to merge the figure and ground, abstracting the drawing. As she painted, Carly worked charcoal back into the drawing blending it over the paint in some cases and emphasizing lines. I think she successfully completed the piece; many more students are at different points in this project. Keep following us on Facebook to see more as they're finished.
I'd also like to send congratulations to high school student, Alyse Delaney on her recent accomplishment. One of her pieces completed outside of TraillWorks has been selected as 1 of 36 finalists in Crayola's "Creativity Connects the World" art contest. I'll share more as we learn the final results of the contest.

Jennie is featured in the April edition of the Sussex County Journal!
Jennie would like to thank the Sussex County Journall and Michael Hartnett, the author of the article, for the tremendous honor of both gracing the cover and being featured in the magazine. Michael did such a tremendous job both in the time spent meticulously interviewing Jennie and in putting together all of the pieces into an engaging written work. You can browse the article here, or pick up a copy while available at TraillWorks. Jennie might even sign it for you!

Another big thanks goes out to Ron Hornung for giving all those who came to the reception a taste of what's to come in his "Handala" workshop this Sunday, May 6th. If you'd still like to sign up:

Student "Handala" in progress
Workshop Description:
Grow your creativity with TraillWorks and join us for a "Handala" workshop instructed by Ron Hornung.
This workshop will take a more humble, lighthearted approach to constructing "universes". Suitable for every level of artistic ability, this workshop aims to help participants discover patterns, relationships and unforeseen meanings in their own mandalas created by hand-tracings, a "handala". A mandala is a representation of the universe, chiefly characterized by circular configuration of geometric shapes. Because of the sophisticated arrangement of elements they are also useful in meditation.
Deadline to sign up is Midnight - Saturday May 5th.
